SPECTRUM Miami During December Art Basel Week
These two striking contemporary pieces will be making the journey to Miami for exhibit at the SPECTRUM Art Show December 2-6, concurrent with exciting Art Basel week. Should be an exciting and stimulating week from the point of view of artist, collector, and gallerist. I’m working on a couple of smaller pieces to complement these larger works, but they’re not yet ready for prime time. More on that later. In the interim, many thanks to Gallery NK for making this opportunity available.
Susan Calloway Fine Arts Showcasing “Inner/Outer”
In Georgetown, Susan Calloway Fine Arts has been featuring my solo exhibit Inner/Outer this September and October. Lots of media buzz from the Washington Post’s Mark Jenkins and Ari Post writing for The Georgetowner.
A few words about the show. Drips, re-stated lines, contrasting color and visible brushwork all help convey the tension and ambiguity that form my signature style. In approaching the subject of the face and the human body, I respond to the feelings behind the facade to suggest resolve, fear, pride, frailty or other emotion. My goal is to suggest a kind of chaos that invites viewers to make their own interpretation. These paintings might best be described as coping with turmoil…Like modern life.
“Inner/Outer” at Susan Calloway Fine Arts
Part of my solo exhibit with Susan Calloway Fine Arts this month, “Long Interval” exemplifies the reason I love to paint. Fluid, gestural brushstrokes, bold color, rich paint, and loose construction all hint at a feeling of a place and time. Whether anticipation or regret, relaxation or tension, the image of this figure conveys an ambiguous moment. Each of us can narrate a different, but credible story for this painting. It depends on our own unique perspective and life experiences.
SPECTRUM Miami Art Show with Gallery NK
Honored to have been invited by Gallery NK to exhibit at the SPECTRUM Art Show in midtown Miami concurrent with Art Basel Miami week — December 2-6. Specializing in contemporary fine art from around the world, the gallery boasts an impressive stable of very talented artists. SPECTRUM showcases innovative new art in an elegant, gallery-style exhibition space.
A yearly occurrence the first week of December, the huge event called Art Basel Miami takes over the entire city — 20 (!) art fairs featuring the best galleries and best artists in the world in addition to the large, always lively art scene of Miami itself. Truly an art lovers’ paradise.
This will be my third year participating in Miami Art Week. Should be a blast, as always. More on this show later!

Leslie Nolan “Mixed Messages”
Check out this cool video of my solo exhibit, “Mixed Messages” at The Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center in Frederick, MD. Great venue, great staff, great volunteers. I am so honored to have been selected for a solo exhibit at this fabulous institution dedicated to the arts. The exhibit features ten paintings — all big heads.
Videographer George L. Miller collaborated with me on this film and I want to thank him for all his suggestions and for his keen professionalism.
Installation at Susan Calloway Fine Arts
Yesterday we delivered ten beautiful, new paintings to Susan Calloway Fine Arts (SCFA) for my first solo exhibit at the gallery. Susan thoughtfully had a full staff on hand to unpack and hang all the artwork. Next thing I knew, one of my pieces was hanging front and center in the window overlooking Wisconsin Avenue – – it looks quite fine there.
It’s great to work with supportive and gracious professionals. The gallery staff really know their business and have a great eye for matching the perfect artwork with their client’s tastes and desires. It’s an honor to be associated with SCFA. And, a thrill to have a big show there.
Inner/Outer by Leslie Nolan at Susan Calloway Fine Arts, 1643 Wisconsin Avenue, Washington, DC in the heart of Georgetown on exhibit now. Opening reception September 18th, 6-8 pm.
