Am selecting pieces from the studio for my upcoming solo exhibit at d’Art Center, Norfolk, Virginia July 1 – 25, 2021. This painting, “A Pulse Beyond 13,” 12×12 inches, may make the cut. I particularly like the way the black color dances around the square and strengthens the figure, making a powerful and compelling statement against the lush background. It epitomizes the rich relationship between ourselves and our surroundings, often at odds, yet inevitably part of one another.
Honored by the selection of this interesting painting in the 58th annual juried exhibition of this terrific art museum in Monroe, Louisiana. Due to renovations, the exhibit is on view at the North East Louisiana African American Heritage Museum. On display through May 2021.

Very honored to have two of my paintings selected for the prestigious City of Overland Park, KS, National Juried Exhibition. Rafe, above, one of the selected works, is a wonderfully expressive painting that defines the fast pace of contemporary life and would look terrific either in the office or at home. It makes me think! And, it seems to emanate both energy and wit, in addition to sporting a color palette that works with any wall.

The gallery talk will feature both me and Dr. L. Erich Keel. Dr. Keel served as Head of Education for the Kreeger Museum until his retirement in 2013. Currently he lectures on twentieth-century German art, leads art-themed study tours to Europe, and serves as a volunteer curator for the Arts Club of Washington exhibition program. Keel earned a Ph.D. in Critical Theory from Emory University.
Gallery hours are Thursday Friday and Sunday from 12-4 pm; Saturday from 1-4 pm.

This grouping of paintings features fresh jazzy figures that have the feel of society on the edge. With mostly vivid colors and painterly brush strokes, I’ve tried to maintain a blur between the real and imagined. They have a contemporary aesthetic that’s infused with emotional tension.
As always, ambiguity and ambivalence rule. All interpretations of these figures remain valid, possible, even probable. I prefer that my paintings address those things that do not lend themselves to easy description.
Selecting the right artwork can be tricky. It’s always a good idea to see it in a residential setting – a test for tone and style within a room. I personally like art that makes me think and provides a lively counterpoint to otherwise static elements of furniture. Some people prefer a more peaceful, languid feeling. Everyone has a different goal for their personal space.
Regardless of preference, trying something out in the room for size and impact makes sense. Whether stimulating or calming, a one of a kind, handmade work of art will elevate the area and make it special. If it doesn’t work, you can always return it to the gallery for another piece that meshes just right with your preferences and objectives.
Here, I’ve displayed some newish pieces at home before delivery to the gallery. Each makes a unique focal point, but I think they look good together, too.
